Residents of East Chicago, Indiana recently learned that their tap water is contaminated with elevated levels of lead. The city of East Chicago, Indiana, has been plagued by lead and arsenic contaminated soil and polluted air from industrial facilities in the area for decades — and residents recently learned that their tap water is also contaminated with high levels of lead. NRDC and our partners have filed an emergency petition calling on the EPA to take immediate action to provide safe, clean drinking water for city residents by distributing free faucet filters or bottled water.
