Stand with the Standing Rock Sioux — Stop the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline
People and tribes from around the world have traveled to North Dakota to stand with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in opposition to the proposed Dakota Access oil pipeline. This dangerous pipeline would carry 450,000 gallons of oil a day right through the heart of land sacred to the Standing Rock Sioux, on its way to refineries along the Gulf coast. Now, the National Guard and State Police have raided one of the peaceful resistance camps, forcibly removing water protectors demonstrating against the pipeline on the tribe’s ancestral lands.
The Dakota Access Pipeline threatens the Standing Rock Sioux’s cultural heritage, their lands, their drinking water and their hard-won sovereignty. I applaud your administration for temporarily halting construction of parts of the pipeline after a review process that the Obama Administration acknowledged was flawed and rife with loopholes. But the oil industry has since gotten the green light to move ahead with construction on their disastrous project — and we must band together to make sure that pipeline never sees the light of day.
Nonviolent protests should not be met with the aggressive tactics on display in North Dakota, and Big Oil should not be able to ram through another dangerous pipeline without a transparent and public review process. Urge President Obama to stand with the Standing Rock Sioux by taking immediate action to repeal the permits and stop the Dakota Access Pipeline.
